Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, dismissed former vice president Yemi Osinbajo’s claim that former military President Ibrahim Babangida was one of the people who tortured Tinub in the military era.
Osinbajo spoke when he reviewed Babangida’s autobiography, Autobiography on the Journey, in a public speech in Abuja last week.
He recalled how Senator Tinubu, then boycotted the military’s disbandment of the Senate after the presidential election on June 12, 1993.
He noted that Tinubu, who was “tortured” by the army, including Babangida, was now present to celebrate one of his former opponents.
However, on Tuesday, February 25, Onanuga spoke in the Sunrise Daily, which he refuted, insisting that Babangida had a significant impact on Tinubu’s political journey Influence.
“I think the former vice president got it wrong. Babangida is not the tormentor of President Tinubu. Don’t forget that in his speech at the event, Tinubu admitted that Babajda inspired him to enter politics,” Onanuga said.
“The military president has spoken about introducing new faces, and many professionals, including Tinubu, have heard the call. So he went there (the book is released) to pay tribute,” Onanuga added.
He clarified that Tinubu’s real challenge to the army began when General Sani Abacha and some MPs tried to reconvene the Senate in Lagos.
