Yora One One One One Voice (Yov) of Yora, led by Aare Okakanfo of Yorubalam, Iba Gani Adams iba Gani Adams rejected Sharia law in parts of the southwest.
Adams warned that the move could undermine the region and threaten Nigeria’s already fragile diversity.
He shared his reservation through a communique issued at the end of Yov’s international virtual conference, with the theme of “Sharia in Yorubalam: Set things directly through reorganization”.
The meeting was chaired by Adams, convener of YOV, bringing together members of the YOV Global Coordination Committee, the conference, key stakeholders, and the son and daughter of the famous Yoruba.
The communiqué emphasized that regional autonomy and reorganization remained the only feasible way to ensure peaceful coexistence and sustainable development in Nigeria.
At the event, Adams condemned the efforts to implement Sharia law on Yoruba’s territory, describing it as a strategy of “weapon religion” for political purposes.
He warned that such a move could aggravate the turmoil and tend to extremes in the region.
Adams said:The introduction of Sharia law will not improve our economic, political or cultural wealth.
“It could undermine peace on our land, force our youth into violence and trigger a crisis similar to what has happened in the rest of the country.”
