
A joint action between the Nigerian police force and the Japanese National Police Service led to the arrest of 11 suspects such as identity theft, romantic scams and computer-related frauds targeting Japanese victims.
Force spokesman ACP Muyiwa Adejobi disclosed this in a statement on Monday, February 17, 2025, saying the number of crackdowns came after a report received on April 3, 2024, detailing the five networks. Crime case, which is related to 13 individuals operating in Nigeria.
Adejobi, who works with the National Cyber Crime Center of the NPF, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Central Bureau and NCB Tokyo, said that extensive investigations have led to arrests.
“The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has worked with the Japan National Police Agency (NPA) to strengthen cooperative efforts aimed at combating the growing threat of cybercrime,” the statement said.
“In a major event, a press conference at the NPF National Cyber Crime Center (NPF-NCCC) highlighted the power and effectiveness of ongoing international partnerships, focusing on successful actions, resulting in the arrest of 11 people involved in serious crimes Suspects, such as identity theft, romantic scams and computer-related fraud, target Japanese victims from Nigeria.
“On April 3, 2024, the NPF National Cyber Crime Center, in partnership with the National Central Bureau of Nigeria and NCB Tokyo, received reports on five cybercrime cases of 11 people and launched an extensive network that utilizes social media platforms, Instagram in particular, lure unsuspecting victims into fraudulent romantic relationships.
“The victims transferred funds through wire transactions that were eventually converted into cryptocurrencies and were remitted to various digital wallets in Nigeria.
“The initial phase of the investigation generated a $33,320 recovery and continued efforts to recover additional stolen funds and to demolish the entire group responsible for these crimes.
