Former England striker and TV host John Fashanu recently found herself at the center of a legal storm in Nigeria.
The 62-year-old, known for his outstanding football career and subsequent media businesses, was arrested in Abuja for a land dispute.
These allegations include criminal conspiracy, intrusion, intimidation, threats to life and obtaining property under false pretexts, all of which strongly deny all of them.
The origin of the dispute
When a group of investors agreed to buy 22 acres of land from Fashanu for more than £500,000.
Fashanu and his attorney then began an investigation when they discovered that workers protected by police began to build peripheral fences on the property.
Their attempt to resolve the problem at the local police department led to their arrest.
Allegations of rights violations
Fashanu asserted that his arrest, as well as the arrest of his wife Vivian and attorney Chinyere Chigbu, was illegal.
He claimed that they were treated inhumanely during their three-hour detention on December 16 and were further restricted until December 19.
In addition, Fashanu claimed that the officer’s confiscation of cell phones constituted a serious violation of his constitutional rights.
Legal litigation and compensation requirements
In response to these incidents, Fashanu filed a lawsuit seeking £100,000 in damages, accusing police of illegal arrests and rights violations.
The legal action says 12 defendants, including the Nigerian Police Force, the Police Inspector General and the Police Commission.
