Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has sparked discussion after publicly acknowledging his Biafran identity.
The music star said every Igbo man naturally belongs to the Biafran heritage.
His comments came shortly after he avoided clarifying his identity during a conversation with sketch producer Carter Effie. However, Kcee later discussed the topic at length in an interview with Yanga 89.9 FM in Lagos, where he discussed the culture, history and personal identity of modern Nigeria.
Kcee made his position clear, insisting that the Igbo people’s collective roots can be traced back to Biafra.
He said:
“As far as I am concerned, every Igbo under the sun today is a Biafran. I am a Biafran. I am an Igbo and Biafra is our home. Just like Arewa and Oduduwa.”
He explained that his comparisons with Arewa and Oduduwa were well thought out, noting that Biafra represents the homeland of the Igbo people in a cultural and historical sense and should not be mistaken for the current political movement.
Kcee further shared the background of the name “Biafra”, noting that it emerged during the 1967 civil war when Frank Opigo from Bayelsa suggested it as a unifying term for the Igbo region.

Read some of the comments below:
@SolomonTheophi9: “This says Biafra was created in 1914 and Kcee Limpopo doesn’t even know his history”
@pdogged: “He did not name BIAFRA for the Igbos but for our ancient eastern region. Many tribes lived there and one day Biafra will come too.”
@OnyeChiMereEze1: “Dr Frank Opigo (may Okeke bless his soul) did not suggest the name ‘Biafra’ to the Eastern Consultative Assembly, instead he reminded the assembly that the name of the region is ‘Biafra’. Don’t forget, he has a PhD in History while Ojukwu has a BA in History.”
@SolomonTheophi9: “Biafra is not only for Igbo people but Igbo majority. There are many tribes in Biafra and it was the ijaw people who gave Biafra the name so why is it an Igbo thing, I am Igbo but Biafra is for all of us not just Igbo people”
@Samfizsy: “Interestingly, the word Biafra was coined by the Portuguese, check that before you argue. MNK would curse Nigeria for being named by the West, but he wants to create another coin named by the West.”
