A kidnapped resident of Ezemo in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State died of shock shortly after being released by his kidnappers.
The woman, Agnes Obetta, was about 50 years old and died of severe hypertension. According to her family, she was rushed to the hospital but died due to complications. Family members confirmed that she died after a ransom was paid for her release.
The Nigerian Army previously announced that 14 kidnapped victims were rescued during a clearance operation in the Benue forest bordering Enugu State on Friday, December 5. Seven of those rescued were from Ezmo.
However, Mr Hillary Onah, a staunch supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), gave a different account of the incident. He claimed that while the kidnappers were counting the ransom money, with Mrs. Oberta’s eldest son still around, “shots suddenly rang out from the so-called rescue team.”
Ona claimed that the kidnappers, shocked by the sporadic shootings, fled with the ransom while the victims fled for their lives. Family sources added that Mrs. Oberta was found unconscious the next day after the newly released victims were forced to flee amid sudden gunfire.
