According to reports, there have been confirmed cases of LASSA fever at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) at Kano State University.
The hospital’s prevention and control department revealed that one of the two recently admitted suspected cases was positive for the viral hemorrhagic disease.
The confirmed case was found in the Garun Mallam local government area on April 5, the department spokesman Salisu Inuwa said. He explained that the first suspected patient died before the samples were collected for testing. “Last week, we had two suspected cases of lassa fever. Initially, both were classified as possible cases. Unfortunately, we were unable to obtain samples from the first patient, who could die before testing.
The second patient voluntarily entered the hospital, tested LASSA fever and confirmed positive. After confirmation, the hospital activated its emergency system and began screening all those who were in contact with the patient. Some hospital staff reported mild symptoms similar to malaria, a disease that shares early signs with Lassa fever. However, all those who are being observed remain stable and do not require hospitalization.
“As a preventive measure, screening begins immediately. Fortunately, all those being observed are stable. There are no hospitalizations and they continue to conduct regular activities under close monitoring.”
The Kano State Department of Health has been alerted and a contact tracing team has been deployed to monitor people who may be exposed. “We immediately notify the state health authorities that they have resolved the matter and are actively engaging in the affected communities,” Inuwa confirmed.
He assured the public that the situation was being carefully managed by hospitals and state health officials and urged residents to remain calm while staying alert. “The situation is under control. There is no need to panic,” he said.
