Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of the Global Living Faith Church, popularly known as Victors Church, has expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of fraudsters, noting that their activities have now spread to all sectors of society, including religious institutions.
During a midweek service, the prominent cleric recounted a recent incident in which someone allegedly impersonated him in an attempt to deceive people. He described the experience as a reflection of the troubling times we live in.
Bishop Oyedepo explained that the imposter contacted one of his aides, impersonated him and made certain demands.
“We’ve had situations where someone identified themselves as me and said I was asking for something,” He shared it with the congregation.
Fortunately, this attempt was thwarted as his aides decided to verify the claim before taking any action.
“My assistant asked the man if he wanted to talk to me. When the man said yes, he got through and it was quickly discovered he was lying.” Bishop Oyedepo recalled.
He added that the imposter was immediately exposed and tried to cover himself up, ultimately getting himself into further trouble.
Bishop Oyedepo used the incident as a cautionary tale, warning that even in churches, fraudulent activities are becoming increasingly bold.
“These crimes are no longer limited to markets or offices They also happen in schools and churches,” he said.
The bishop urged worshipers and the public to remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of verifying information before responding to any request, regardless of who is mentioned.
“Stick to the truth and you won’t become a victim.” Bishop Oyedepo suggested.
