In other news… Members of the Cathedral of Nigeria (Anglican Church) in Sapele, Delta State, on Sunday protested against Bishop Erifeta’s attempt to reinstate him as the substantive bishop of the church. Demonstrations disrupted Sunday services along Boyo Road.
Protesters, mostly women, held placards that read: “Say no to the misappropriation of our funds” “We don’t want Erifeta to come back again,” and "Enough is enough of underdevelopment in Sapele Diocese," while chanting slogans of unity.
Bishop Erifeta and his entourage arrived at the cathedral accompanied by security but were blocked by the faithful who refused to accept his return. Members said a letter from the bishop had directed his reinstatement even though he had previously been removed from office amid allegations of mismanagement.
Former church leaders including Evangelist Akuroma Otuike, Rev. Gabriel Enudje and Rev. Freeborn Ejowovwo said the diocese has been flourishing since Erifeta’s exit. They cited improvements in infrastructure, timely payment of salaries and promotions to the “ecclesiastical rescue team”, which contrasted with the dilapidated condition of the cathedral during Erifeta’s tenure.
Leaders called on the bishops to redeploy Bishop Erifeta to another diocese to maintain peace, warning that forcing his return could escalate tensions. They also called on the Delta State government and the public to intervene.
Bishop Erifeta and his security team eventually left the cathedral and did not resume duty.
