
The Senate proposes to create 31 new states throughout Nigeria. Check out the full list and other details below.
Goldennewsng reported that the Nigerian Senate is reviewing part of a part of an ongoing amendment to the 1999 Constitution to review proposals from 31 states nationwide, which could be the most significant restructuring of the federal system in Nigeria since independence.
The Senate Constitutional Review Committee, led by Senate Vice President Barau Jibrin, announced plans to hold a public hearing on Zonal from July 4 to 5 in Lagos, Enugu, Ikot Ekpenny, Jos, Jos, Maiduguri and Kano. The hearing will collect opinions from citizens on comprehensive reform.
According to the committee, the country’s creation proposals came from all six geopolitical regions, with seven requests made in the Northeast, followed by five in the Northwest, Southwest, South-South and North-Central. The Southeast requires three to five new states.

• In addition to the creation of the country, the Commission also considered several landmark reforms:
• Complete autonomy of local governments (including independent electoral institutions).
•20 bills regarding judicial reform, including setting a timetable for judgment and expanding court powers.
• Establish a state police and security commission.
• Fiscal reforms to implement budget schedules and increase revenue sharing.
•Gender is included in gender, providing women with reserved legislative seats.
•Disciplinary voting rights and legal recognition of independent candidates.
• Expand the role of traditional rulers through state and state legislatures.
• Decentralization of power, including moving items such as labor and transportation to concurrent lists.
Goldennewsng reported that the Senate committee urged all Nigerians to attend the hearing, stressing that public opinion is crucial to developing a constitution that reflects the current situation of the country.
