
Maria Ochefu is the woman behind the popular mom market in Nigerian military barracks at the age of 86.
Her son, Professor Yakubu Ochefu, said she died in sleep on Tuesday, March 18.
She worked as a patient at Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi, and she will turn 87 in April.
Security analyst Deji Adesogna shared the message she passed on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “RIP Mama Mammy Market.
“Maria Ochefu, the founder of the National Military Camp’s Mom Market, is 86 years old and is dead.
“She married Colonel Anthony Ochev, who was once the military governor of Enugu State.”

She pioneered a market that has become an important part of military life, providing soldiers and their families with basic commodities, food and social gathering spaces.
