Mark Carney is sworn in as Canadian Prime Minister after Trudeau resigns

Mark Carney is sworn in as Canadian Prime Minister after Trudeau resigns

Former Canadian governor Mark Carney, now the Prime Minister of Canada, has formed 24 members, more than 37 members.

Carney, who was elected as the leader of the Liberal Party in Ottawa last Sunday, has since tried to distance himself from his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, who served for more than nine years.

The new prime minister will name the familiar face his first cabinet, which will last only a few days and the election is imminent.

“We are a very focused government, focused on action and we will work immediately,” Carney said in Rideau Hall. “Canada’s new government focuses on what is important to Canadians.”

He said his administration will protect Canadian workers from President Trump’s tariffs and hopes to develop Canada’s economy by “sending more money in Canadians’ pockets.” Carney’s campaign “spends less” and hopes to prioritize building more trade corridors with allies.

“The numbers in the cabinet are smaller because it’s a time of crisis… It’s a smaller cabinet and all the ministers are senior. They’re all frontlines,” he said.

Eight former ministers, including Trudeau, announced they will not participate in the upcoming federal election.

The new cabinet was the first meeting on Friday afternoon. The Prime Minister will travel to London and Paris next week to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. Carney has not spoken to US President Donald Trump yet.

Earlier on Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded to his regular presidential comment that Canada would benefit from the 51st U.S. state. Rubio attended a G7 foreign ministers meeting in Charlevoix.

“It’s crazy,” Carney said in response to Rubio’s speech at a press conference.

Carney also giggled and said Canadians were conducting polls “absolutely before November.”

Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau officially resigned at a private meeting with Gov. Mary Simon on Friday morning. He also suggested that she ask new liberal Mark Carney to form a new government.

Trudeau said goodbye to Canadians on social media.
