As the 2027 general election approaches, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has warned politicians that supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) or openly endorsing President Bola Tinubu does not automatically guarantee them a seat in the second term.
Wike made this statement at a political meeting in Emowa Local Government Area of Rivers State as part of his ongoing consultations in the state. He was welcomed by committee chairman Chidi Lloyd, traditional ruler Sergeant Awuse and other party officials.
The former Rivers State governor stressed that support for President Tinubu has been settled politically and should not be considered a factor in deciding who gets the party’s nomination. Loyalty to the president alone, he insisted, was not enough to ensure automatic nomination to any elective office.
“The question is not whether you support Tinubu or not. This issue was settled long ago. The Tinubu issue is no longer relevant. No one should come to me with support for Tinubu as a reason to get votes. Who in Rivers State does not support Tinubu? That alone will not win you the nomination!” Zhou warned.
His comments come in the wake of recent political changes in Rivers State, which included the defection of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and others to the ruling party following a brief conflict and subsequent reconciliation between Wike and his successor.
