Banerjee announced an investigation and apologized to Messi and “sports fans” for the incident at the stadium.

Messi’s spokesman said that he fulfilled his pre-agreed time commitment. As for the organization of the event itself, he referred the BBC to Banerjee’s apology statement on social media.
A police official told reporters that the “main organizer” of the event had been arrested, but did not provide any further details, AFP reported.
The official added that authorities would look into how organizers could refund ticket buyers.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) said it was not involved in the “private event”.
Messi comes to India for his ‘goat’ [greatest of all time] Tour”, a series of promotional events held in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi.
His tour began with the unveiling of a 70-foot (21 m) statue of himself in Calcutta, which was assembled by a crew of 45 over the course of 27 days. Messi was actually present at the event due to security concerns.
Thousands of fans traveled to the city’s stadiums for a chance to see the footballer in person.
They chanted slogans, bought jerseys and wore “I love Messi” headbands.
Messi initially walked out of the stadium to wave to fans, but after his appearance came to an abrupt end on Saturday, some frustrated fans stormed the pitch, destroying banners and tents, while others threw plastic chairs and water bottles.
