On Friday, the District Court on Isabo Island in Isabota, Ogun State sentenced a woman, Falitatu Amidu and her daughter Ayisatu to steal a sack of fish containing stocks, dried ponmo and Dry Cow meat worth N.1 million, belonging to Mr. Kafayat Alao.
The defendant, who lives in the Oko area of 21 years old in Abeokuta, Ogun, was found guilty of two counts of convicted and theft charges.
Police prosecutor Insp Kehinde Fawunmi told the court that the defendant committed a crime at the Lafenwa market in a month in August 2024.
Fawunmi explained that Falilatu Amidu has helped the complainant take the load from the shop in Lafenwa where the complainant sells her items.
He said: “The complainant asked her to help her pick merchandise from the store, and she waited for more than an hour and she did not see the defendant, which led her to go to the store to check her.”
“When she arrived at the store, she did not find the falilatu, she noticed that a large bag of dried meat, ponmo and stock fish was missing and the defendant had nowhere to be found.”
Fawunmi further explained that Falilatu stole the goods and handed them over to his daughter (Ayisatu) for sale.
He said Ayisatu received stolen goods from his mother because they knew the items were stolen.
However, the prosecutor pointed out that the crime violated Sections 516, 390 (9) and 127 of the Ogun Criminal Law of 2006.
When the verdict was made on Friday, Magistrate of Abu Kuta District Court in Isabo Province, Mrs. Oo Odumosu, believed that all the evidence presented by the prosecutor proved that there was no doubt that the offender was guilty of the alleged crime.
However, Odumosun sentenced the mother and daughter to six months in prison each time with an N5,000 option.
She ordered the offender to return N100,000 to the complainant as compensation and then receive a fine of N5,000.
