For the past 44 years, people around the world have been able to listen to music videos by blasting music through speakers throughout the day.
However, that’s all set to change after MTV confirmed it was making sweeping changes to its broadcast output.
The UK previously had MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live, as well as MTV itself on its channels.
The deal between Paramount Universal and Skydance Media is set to be finalized in 2024, but the company has been preparing for deep spending cuts for years.
The main reason behind this is that audiences no longer watch traditional music on television.
As the likes of YouTube, TikTok and Spotify take over, fewer viewers are watching MTV, which means less advertising dollars and cost-cutting.
This all culminated in Paramount Skydance’s move to digital and streaming content.
“This is a dark day for the music industry. MTV was once an industry giant but is now a complete shell,” a source told Metro.
Although the flagship MTV channel will continue to air, the network currently only airs reality shows.
