US rapper A$AP Rocky has revealed that his mother has long believed he was destined to be with global music superstar Rihanna, revealing she encouraged him to abandon another relationship to pursue the Barbadian singer instead.
In an interview with The New York Times, Rocky explained that he and Rihanna were just friends at the time and that he had no interest in taking things beyond that stage.
Looking back on the situation, the rapper said he’s glad he didn’t rush into a relationship with Rihanna sooner, noting that neither of them was emotionally ready for commitment or starting a family at the time.
“Rihanna has always been my favorite. I always slept with her. My mom used to say, ‘I know you like this girl you’re with now, but I want you to be with Rarity.’
“I would tell her that Rihanna was just a friend. But my mother would insist that Rihanna was a real friend and that I should go to her. I tell you, mother knows best.
“But I’m glad that my relationship with Rihanna started then. Because at any time before that, I don’t think I was ready for something like this. I don’t think she was ready, either.” he said.
A$AP Rocky became even closer with Rihanna after attending her Diamond Tour in 2013.
Speculations about their relationship began shortly after Rihanna ended her relationship with billionaire Hassan Jameel in January 2020, after a three-year relationship.
Rocky was previously linked to model Kendall Jenner in 2016, and their relationship ended in 2017.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky have since started a family together and welcomed their first child in 2022, their second child in 2023, and their third child in 2025.
