The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) criticized a student’s attack on a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
They also urged a thorough investigation into what happened.
NANS Senate Chairman Babatunde Akinteye said the association is committed to fighting for the rights of students while also promoting discipline, respecting authority and abide by school rules.
He stressed that violence and bad behavior in schools across the country is unacceptable and encouraged students to respect those responsible.
He said “NAN has always been at the forefront of advocating student rights, academic freedom and a beneficial learning environment. However, we equally uphold discipline, respect authority and comply with the laws of the governing bodies. It is from this perspective that we strongly condemn Unizik The student physically attacked a lecturer in a Tiktok recording.
“While students have the right to express themselves, including using social media, this right must be exercised with etiquette, responsibility and respect for others. This student’s reporting action embarrasses the student body and does not represent the values of the Nigerian student community.
“In view of this incident, we call for a thorough and unbiased investigation into Unizik’s management to determine the facts of the case. Due diligence must be observed and a fair hearing should be conducted to all parties concerned. However, if convicted, if convicted , appropriate sanctions should be imposed on deterrence of others in accordance with the regulations of the institution. ”
