The NATO Defense Academy Scholarships 2023 are fully funded research scholarships for international students. The scholarship will provide a stipend to cover his/her accommodation in Rome and travel expenses.
The NATO Defense Academy scholarships are open to international students to study research courses in Italy. The NATO Defense Academy currently offers eight scholarships each year related to NATO and its partners in the area of defense and security policy studies.
Its purpose is to encourage research and policy analysis in areas of particular concern to NATO member states and countries that are part of the Partnership for Peace (PfP), Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) and other Military Cooperation (OMC)/Partnerships Global (PAG) frameworks. Since the program began in 1993, the college has awarded a total of 109 scholarships up to and including 2017.
The mission of the NATO Defense Academy is to conduct academic studies and research to further the broader objectives of the Alliance.
The overall objective is to promote research and policy analysis in areas of particular interest to NATO member states and members of the Partnership for Peace (PfP), Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) and other Military Cooperation (OMC)/Partnerships Global (PAG) frameworks.
The Residency Fellowship Program has the following specific goals:
- Contribute to the Research Council’s activity calendar by researching topics of interest to the Alliance;
- Contribute to research on the NATO agenda for NATO member and partner countries;
- Provide opportunities for fellows and academics to learn from the NATO community and gain a comprehensive understanding of the Academy and working in an international environment;
- Expand the understanding of NATO partners and member states about the work of NATO and NDCs;
- Provides lectures for Senior Courses (SC) and NATO Regional Cooperation Courses (NRCC) on a case-by-case basis;
- Contribute to NDC educational activities;
- Help promote the development of scholars on NATO-related issues.

Eligibility Criteria for NATO Defense Academy Scholarships
To be eligible for the NATO Defense Academy Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Required language:
- Very good English language proficiency required.
- Knowledge of French and/or Italian is also helpful but not required.
- Eligible countries: NATO member states and countries that are part of the Partnership for Peace (PfP), Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) and Other Military Cooperation (OMC)/Partnerships Global (PAG) frameworks.
- Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English or French and be computer literate.
- English Language Requirements: Very good English language proficiency is required. Knowledge of French and/or Italian would also be helpful, but not required
