Nigerian-born nurse Chimzuruoke Okembunachi has had her nursing license revoked in Australia after a court found she repeatedly fell asleep during night shifts at an aged care facility, putting elderly residents at risk.
The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled on January 20 that her conduct in March 2024 amounted to professional misconduct, resulting in her registration being cancelled.
Okembunachi, 25, is the only registered nurse on duty during several night shifts at Hardi Aged Care in Guildford, in Sydney’s west, caring for about 100 residents with the support of nursing assistants.
The court heard she spent six nights sleeping on duty, resulting in missed medications, including missing morphine on three occasions. On one occasion, she allegedly directed an unauthorized assistant to administer Panadol to a patient.
Although the court acknowledged her remorse, it ruled that deregistration was necessary and said her actions had the potential to endanger patients’ lives. She was banned from applying for review for at least nine months.
In other news… Social media commentator and influencer VeryDarkMan has continued to publicly criticize Afrobeat superstar Wizkid, accusing the singer of repeatedly undermining the legacy of the music legend and veteran figure in the Nigerian music industry.
In a recent comment shared online, VeryDarkMan opined that Wizkid has not contributed enough to society to prove himself to be on the same level as iconic figures such as the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He described Wizkid’s recent comments comparing himself to Fela as inappropriate and insensitive, claiming they failed to reflect public sentiment.
According to VeryDarkMan, Wizkid’s comments allegedly encouraged some fans to disrespect Fela’s legacy, which he said was deeply disturbing given Fela’s cultural and social impact outside of music.
The influencer further claimed that Wizkid has a recurring pattern of downplaying the achievements of industry pioneers. To back up his claim, he cited past internet incidents involving Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy. VeryDarkMan claims that Wizkid subtly fired Don Jazzy by retweeting comments that disparaged the famous music executive as an “influencer.”
He insisted the actions were not isolated but reflected wider attitudes and urged Wizkid to show greater respect for those who laid the foundation for the industry.
VeryDarkMan said Wizkid did not surpass Fela in terms of social contributions and accused the singer of deliberately “testing the waters” before making comments that could trigger backlash and disrespect for the music legend.
“Wizkid doesn’t talk about Fela any less than I do. Contribution to society? Get out, he’s not. A lot of them can’t even lace my boots. He started a pattern and after testing the waters, he decided to try again. That’s why he decided to do this to Fela. Sadly, Wizkid didn’t read the room before he decided to do this to Fela, inciting his followers to insult Fela Kuti’s name.
What is this pattern? Wizkid likes to play down the legacy of his predecessors. Let me give you an example: Don Jazzy. Wizkid said it’s not appropriate to talk to people who are contracted to influencers. And then another guy now asks, do you want to talk to Don Jazzy? Wizkid retweeted it. Then another person said Don Jazzy is an influencer and Wizkid retweeted it. “
