Nigerians have begun to gain benefits from using compressed natural gas (CNG) as a replacement for gasoline, with some of which reporting significant cost savings.
This development is due to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Project (PCNGI) targeting 11,500 new CNG vehicles and 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing PMS-dependent vehicles.
Civil servant and Abuja resident Chinoso Akatobi-Michael said CNG saved her N36,000 per week. “I can say that CNG is more beneficial and cost-effective for me than gasoline. Since I convert my vehicle to CNG, I save N36,000 per week,” she said. Abuja’s company driver Kunle Adebayo saves N45,000 per week after converting the vehicle to CNG.

Billy Gillis-Harry, president of the Petroleum Products Retail Store Owners Association, stressed that in terms of cost, CNG is an alternative to gasoline.
“There is no doubt that CNG is an advantageous alternative to gasoline; that’s why we are pushing it. However, the main challenge is the cost of building CNG stations; that’s why we’re asking the government to intervene with a 100 billion guild,” he said. .
FG’s $450 million investment accelerates CNG expansion in Nigeria – PCNGI
The President’s Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has invested more than $450 million to expand the Nigerian compressed natural gas (CNG) industry.
PCNGI Project Director and CEO Michael Oluwagbemi made this revelation initiative in his speech at the 9th edition of the Nigeria Energy Forum (NEF 2024) in Lagos on Monday.
