Nigerians pay $80 for each package sent to the United States

Nipost: Nigerians pay $80 tax on each parcel sent to the United States

The Nigeria Post Office (NIPOST) said on Friday that or its Naira is equivalent to every package sent to the United States.

Nipost said in the circular that the move will take effect from August 29, 2025, but revealed letters and documents that would be exempted from mandatory prepayment of customs fees.

It explained that the development follows an executive order from the United States, which suspends a minimum exemption for all postal transportation worldwide.

“Effective from 29 August 2025 and comply with the Executive Order, all postal projects will attract USD 80 (or its Naira equivalent) of prepaid customs duties at the reception in Nigeria,” the agency said.

It noted: “Global logistics operations are also affected as airlines and cargo carriers take more cautious measures when handling U.S.-bound cargo. This may extend shipping and processing time and may lead to delays in delivery. All cargoes encountered in the U.S. will be subject to customs inspections at the destination.

“Nipost is actively participating in the General Postal Union (UPU), the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and our airline partners to minimize service disruptions and safeguard customer experience,” reads part of the loop.

“We assure our customers that despite global regulation, Nipost is committed to providing safe, reliable and efficient postal and express delivery services.
