Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been revived amid reports that the Democratic Republic of Congo could face sanctions for using ineligible players.
In November, the Democratic Republic of Congo defeated the Super Eagles in a penalty shootout to ensure that the African team entered the intercontinental playoffs. However, sources say that several DRC players who switched nationalities did not complete the necessary qualification procedures. Since the Democratic Republic of the Congo does not recognize dual nationality, the players’ failure to formally renounce their previous nationality may have violated FIFA regulations.
Further allegations emerged that some players taking part in the playoffs were over 21 but still held passports from other countries, making them ineligible under FIFA rules.
According to SCORENigeria, the case against the Democratic Republic of Congo is likely to be more serious than a similar incident in which South Africa was punished for fielding ineligible players against Lesotho. A petition has reportedly been submitted challenging the DR Congo’s qualification, offering a potential route back to the World Cup for the Super Eagles if the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico have not yet taken place.
