The incident occurred in Kocani, a small town about 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of the capital Skopje. According to the Ministry of the Interior, “at least 50 people died in a disco in Kokani”, and about 1,500 singers gathered.
The fire broke out in the performance of the country’s famous hip-hop duo DNK, a popular nightclub. The concert begins at midnight on Sunday and is attended mainly by young people.
According to local media SDK, the fire began around 3 a.m. (0200 GMT) and more than 100 people were injured on the grounds of rescue sources. The injured were transported to the hospital in Kocani and Step, about 30 kilometers south of the town.
The Macedonian military’s medical department has been deployed to strengthen hospital staff for the treatment of injured. Authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of the fire, but local media speculated that it may have been triggered by the use of pyrotechnic equipment.
As the investigation continues, the tragedy has caused shock waves across the country, and emergency responders are working to assess the full scale of the disaster.
