Joe Ajaero, chairman of the Nigerian Labor Assembly (NLC), has directed union leaders to start mobilizing their members in preparation for controlling the 36 state offices and the national secretariat of the Abuja Labor Party (LP).
Ajaero released the directive in an internal memo provided on Tuesday. The ruling comes after the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, which revoked previous rulings from the lower court.
This move echoes the March 21, 2024 incident, when aggrieved trade unionists invaded the LP headquarters and other offices. At the time, the LP National Working Committee accused unionists of trying to steal sensitive documents and funds. Nevertheless, Ajaro insisted that they could not be with him and allowed the leadership of Julius Abure to ignore the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Ajaro said:As we warned him about a year ago, regardless of how long the prank lasts, Nigerian workers and real Labour members will always collect what belongs to them. Through this communication, we urge every worker in Nigeria, all real members of the Labour Party and all democratic enthusiasts to be on standby to peacefully reclaim all the Labour Party offices across the country.transparent
He added that the NLC political committee and relevant Labor stakeholders will issue further directives.
Ajaero also announced that all security agencies, especially the Nigerian Police Force and the Nation Security Service, would like to remind them that they comply with and enforce the Supreme Court’s judgment.
He stressed that anyone who doesn’t do so will damage the country’s international reputation.
Ajaero further expressed surprise that despite the Supreme Court’s ruling, Abure and his colleagues continued to show as national officials of the party.
He criticized the arrogance of the rule of law demonstrated by the LP leadership, which he claimed led to the invasion of the party’s office and secretariat last year.
To address the leadership vacuum, Ajaero suggested that the remaining members of the LP National Executive Committee should appoint interim leadership to oversee the inclusive national congress in accordance with the party’s constitution and the Supreme Court’s decision.
In addition, he called for the removal of Abure and his supporters’ names Independent National Election Commission (INEC) Portal.
“Finally, we call for an independent National Election Commission, which has been declaring the Court’s declaration in the leadership issue in the Labour leadership-type question, in order to make the Supreme Court’s definite judgment fully function to remove every badge of Mr. Julius and his National Working Commission.the statement draws a conclusion.
The attempt to reach the LP National Propaganda Minister Obiora Ifoh’s attempt to reach the comments was not successful. However, Alhaji Umar Farouk, the party’s state secretary, replied: “We will make a statement on this soon. Threats are nothing new. We’re used to their breakage. ”
