Kaduna Governor Uba Sani said northern politicians failed to apologize to the region.
He spoke in an interview with Trust TV.
He added that today’s governments must allow criticism but should be rooted in the interests of the people, not driven by the seeking of power.
“Every democracies have to allow criticism, but they have to be constructive and for the benefit of the Nigerian people. That’s what we do as activists – not because we want power.”
“But when you attack the government and get involved…anyone – like I said – is from northern Nigeria and has been in political positions for the last 20 years, we all need to look at ourselves in the mirror and apologize to the people of northern Nigeria. We let them down.”
Sani acknowledged being part of the system and said the challenges in northern Nigeria stemmed from decades of underdevelopment and neglect.
“I’ll say here today – all of us; I’m a senator in this country, and the issue in northern Nigeria didn’t start two years ago,” he said.
“The development we’ve talked about over the past 20 years or lack of development; next time we meet, I can provide you with data and statistics.
“I am the chairman of the Banking Commission, so I know the poverty index in Northern Nigeria. I know what we are talking about is how many people are financially excluded.”
The governor said that although former President Muhammadu Buhari led a large spending on social intervention, the situation in the region has become even worse due to general exclusion.
“Don’t forget, when Buhari was president – people forgot that – he spent hundreds of billions of dollars in social interventions.”
“But I will tell you that even after that, the north will become increasingly poorer. Because 70% of the population in northern Nigeria (especially the masses) are completely excluded from financially.
“If you are a former senator, a member of the House, a former governor, a former minister, and even a former vice president of Northern Nigeria for the past 20 years – you are part of the problem. All of us.”
The governor asked political leaders to avoid cheating citizens with dishonest statements while respecting critics who speak truthfully and uphold true moral principles.
“That’s why I believe we can’t deceive the people of northern Nigeria. We must never mislead them,” Sani said.
“That’s why I said before, I have no problem with people who criticize the government – people like Dan Bello Galadenchi.
I can tell you that all of these people have the moral right to criticize the government. But those who belong to the rotten ones, now say they have repented – please, I think that is wrong. ”
