Benin’s Oba denies involvement in public attack on actor Dr Pedro Obaseki

The Traditional Council of Benin has denied that the Oba of Benin was involved in the alleged abuse of Pedro Obaseki, stressing that the incident was neither authorized nor out of character for the revered monarch.

In a proclamation issued on December 31, 2025 and signed by Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Council, the Council stated that the Oba of Benin is a peace-loving father of all and will not sanction violence under any circumstances.

“The unfortunate incident in which Pedro Obaseki was brutally treated was not authorized by the Oba of Benin and could not be authorized as it is not in keeping with the character of our revered monarch,” the statement read.

The committee warned young people not to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the level of provocation, and urged them to respect the country’s laws in their actions and words.

It also advised the public to let appropriate security agencies handle all matters, while warning social media users to properly verify information before sharing.

The statement concluded by expressing the New Year’s goodwill of His Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, CFR, Oba of the Royal Family of Benin, as the Palace reiterated its commitment to peace and lawful conduct.

“Oba ghato kpere,” the release added.
