On Monday, the governor of Okpebholo has raised the minimum wage for workers in Edo State from ₦70,000 to 75,000 to improve their living standards.
The governor made the announcement Thursday, May 1, when he delivered his Labor Day speech at Samuel Ogbumu Island Stadium in Benin, Edo State.
“Today, I am proud to announce that our government has approved a minimum wage of 75,000 n75,000 per month for Edo workers.
“This is how we say thank you, Edo workers. We believe this will make a real difference and in return we expect you to build a better Edo new dedication together.
“Since taking office, my government has been committed to the welfare of our workers. One of our first actions in office was to convert many recreational workers, including over 1,000 cleaners who have not been working safe for many years, making them core civil servants, making them stable and at ease.
“We have hired 500 new teachers to relieve classroom stress and help students learn better. We are also reviewing casual positions for more than 3,000 Edo teachers as their efforts will shape the future of our children,” he said.
“We approved the recruitment of 450 clinical and non-clinical staff at state hospitals and recruited 126 contract personnel at EDO State Specialty Hospitals. These steps not only enhance our health system, but also improve the job stability of health professionals.”
The governor also informed the public that his government cleared the wage arrears owed to Edo National Polytechnic staff, as well as many other steps to improve workers’ lives.
He added: “In the judiciary, we ensure that the delayed judges have been sworn in and are now fully performing their duties.
“Showing that our commitment will not end at retirement, we have also approved health insurance coverage for retirees because we do not believe our responsibility to workers will not end when leaving active service.”
