Dele Momodu, a former presidential candidate and prominent figure in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), stressed the importance of effectively challenging President Bora Tinubu’s strong Northern candidate in the 2027 election.
In Arise TV’s Morning Show on Wednesday, April 30, Momodu criticized the status quo of Nigerian politics, regretting the decline of principled discourse and the rise of opportunism.
He described Nigerian politics as “optical fantasy – like magic, see more and less.”
Momodu expressed concern that many politicians prioritize personal interests over common interests.
He stressed the strategic importance of the North in the presidential election, noting that the region felt marginalized under the Tinubu government and claimed a preference for the Southern allies.
According to Momodu, this dissatisfaction may inspire the capabilities of voters in the north, which is crucial for the opposition to send a strong candidate from the north to unite and mobilize broad support.
He asserted: “I believe that Tinubu can only be effectively resisted by another powerful candidate from the north.
“Any Southerner who thinks they can challenge Tinubu is likely to waste time. The PDP or any alliance must recognize that power dynamics require strategic thinking. If they really want to compete with Tinubu’s stance, they can’t succeed with the Southern candidate alone.”
Momodu suggested that a unified front – including influential northern figures such as Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso – could enhance the opposition’s chances.
“We witnessed the split of the PDP. Half of its members participated in the coalition talks, while the other half was loyal to the party. This caused confusion. I recently spoke with our governor in Bauchi, who thought we should not give up on the PDP but should try to attract others.
“But if the PDP boycotts and chooses to stay stagnant, what options still exist? The collapse of the party may need to be considered.
“Historically, many political parties have disappeared. Look at UPN or NPN – where is it now? Even advertising that started in Lagos has almost disappeared. Unless major reforms are being made, PDP may go on a similar path.”
Momodu said in his defense of Atiku Abubakar’s integrity: “I see people in the Delta celebrating consistency with the mainstream, but I want to know what tangible benefits have been brought to people over the years. For twenty years, the founding members of the PDP have been working to connect with Populace and Popelace – with the national Gridity to the national GRID -ERING -DERIFER -DROUSPORION -YER -YET -YET -YET -YET -YET -YET -YET -YET -DROUPRORION -YER DISROUS -DORRION -DOUPRORION.
“The claim that Atiku will join APC is simply incredible; I can guarantee it. APC itself is full of internal problems, lacking disciplines or cohesion to solve key problems.”
