Former Abia Governor and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, urges President Bola Tinubu to formally admit his late Mko Abiola is one of Nigeria’s past presidents.
Kalu called on Abiola’s portrait to be placed along with the portraits of other former leaders in the presidential villa, emphasizing that his victory on June 12, 1993 should be fully recognized.
On Tuesday, February 25, Kalu spoke with Senate reporters at a plenary meeting, referring to the recent memoirs of former military president Ibrahim Babangida, who admitted Abio Abiola won the election. Kalu said: “Yes, Abiola won the election. I want to say that President Tinob should declare him president after his death.”
He praised former President Muhammadu Buhari for awarding Abiola national honors, but insisted that further recognition was necessary.
“Since Abiola’s victory, his photos should be placed among the past presidents of Nigeria. I commend former President Buhari for giving him national honor, but I also call on President Tinob to formally recognize him and to bring him to justice. The image is placed where it belongs. This will help bring. It fuels his family,” Karu said.
Kalu said in Babangida’s memoir that they were incomplete and urged former military leaders to release a volume two to clarify unresolved issues regarding the June 12 election. “I look forward to the second edition of Babangida because the first book doesn’t reveal all the reality. I attended the meeting at the event on June 12 and I know what happened. Babangida should call out the name declaration of the people responsible for preventing elections. ”
He also refuted the claim that the 1966 coup was a national conspiracy, which he insisted was “a Nigerian coup executed by the military” rather than an Igbo coup.
