Osan Local Government Elections Still Begin Despite Calls for AGF Suspension, Police

Despite calls from the federal Attorney General, Lateef Adegbite and Nigerian Police Force, local government elections in Osan State have begun.

The exercise started at 8 a.m. in some local governments, including the Ed North Local Government area, which Ademola Adeleke voted for.

After the governor voted, he described the exercise as peace and called on the people of the country to come out to vote peacefully. As the exercises proceed seamlessly, voters are voted in certain voting units.

Federal Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi called for a moratorium on elections after a controversial court of appeals sentence, allegedly reinstateing the early fired local government chair and lawmakers, with police citing security threats.

According to Attorney General Acres Court of Justice, on February 10, 2025, the verdict of the Federal High Court of Osobo of November 25, 2022 was revoked. The chair of the local council of all Progressive Assembly (APC) was previously fired by the lower court.

Police said it received reliable intelligence on the possibility of violence and serious security threats if the election is planned.

Police explained in a statement by its public relations official Olumuyiwa Adejobi that reports collected from joint intelligence gatherings show that various groups, including political elements and other relevant parties, are mobilizing to inspire unrest, undermine public peace and undermine Democratic order.

However, the Osan State government insisted on continuing the election, saying it did not want to violate a court order that directed the election.
