The Oyo State Government has dropped criminal charges against Ooni’s ex-wife Naomi Silekukola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agigagibo FM; Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Ibadan Bashaoren Islamic High School.
The allegations were initially slammed in the trio following the tragic stampede in December 2024, which killed at least 35 children in children’s holiday gatherings.
However, they were released after the charges against them were dropped on Thursday, March 20.
The video shared online shows that the defendant was obviously excited after being released, smiling and exchanging pleasure.
Oyo State Attorney General Abiodun Aikomo confirmed the decision in a media briefing, stressing that despite the tragic incidents requiring legal action, the government ultimately prioritized the Justice Department over persecution.
“This is an unfortunate event that leads to many lives,” Aikomo said on Facebook Live broadcast. “When death occurs unnaturally, the law must act. However, we consider the empathy and compassion shown by the defendant and believe it is in the justice interest to terminate the case.”
Prior to this decision, the OYO State High Court in Ibadan had bailed the defendant. Justice Kamorudeen Olawoyin ruled that Naomi, Hamzat and Fasasi should provide two deposits respectively and provide two guarantors. The court also ordered them to give up their passports and avoid media involvement.
The case sparked public protests, with the victim’s families demanding responsibility for the stampede at Bashloren Islamic High School.
Governor Seyi Makinde earlier insisted that the person in charge must face trial but remained open to legal resolutions.
