Margaret Ekpeyong Okon, the South Assistant Women Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has resigned from the party, further exacerbating the political shift within the Cross River State.
Her resignation was only 48 hours after PDP’s 2024 election lieutenant governor candidate Emana Amawhe, who also resigned from the party.
In a letter to the ward chairman of Edem Odo Ward, Akpabyu Local Government District, Oken expressed her gratitude for her opportunity to serve the party. She highlighted the journey from ward executive members to councillors, most recently a member of the state executive committee and a South Assistant State Women’s Leader.
“I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve partisans in a variety of capacities, from being a member of Ward Exco to serving as a member of the parliament and, most recently, as a member of the State Executive Committee/Assistant State Women’s Leader South, I have always held the position I have held,” she wrote. “These experiences are invaluable and I am deeply grateful for the trust and support I have received throughout the journey.”
Okon further noted that the insights she gained in the PDP will shape her future efforts, adding that she remains committed to serving the community and advocating for progress.
With Amawhe withdrawing and as the internal re-alignment of PDP continues, her departure marks another major development in the state’s political landscape.
