Mr. Peter Obi, an ally of Labor’s presidential candidate Oseloka H. Obaze, announced his resignation. Obaze is a former diplomat and secretary of the Anambra state government under Obi, and is closely related to Labor as an adviser and key figure.
Obaze confirmed in a letter to reporters in Anambra on Sunday, May 4 that he had informed LP Chairman 406 Ochuche Ward 406 Ogbaru Local Government Area, the Ogbaru Local Government Area in Anambra State, shortly after the party election on April 5, his ruling.
Obaze explained that his departure was a protest against the April 5 governoral primary election in Anambra state, describing it as “full of total violations that plague fraud and crime.” He criticized the process of not being consistent with the party’s constitution, core values or democratic principles.
He said: “The process, behavior and results of the Labor gubernatorial primary were held at the AWKA on April 5, 2025, which is not consistent with the party’s constitution and the core values that advocate democracy or the true core values or the real democratic purpose. So I am here to disconnect myself from the Labor Party,” he said.
Obaze also cited the leadership crisis at the Labour national level, referring to the ongoing conflict between the factions of Abure and Nenadi Usman, another key reason for his decision.
Obaze confirmed the authenticity of his resignation letter, adding: “The letter is true and speaks for himself.”
In 2022, Obaze resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) a week before Peter Obi and then became the Labour presidential placeholder. Later, he served as Obi’s campaign manager in the 2023 election and became an important figure behind the Observation movement.
