The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the driver of the articulated vehicle that smashed two members of the Nigerian Vigirant team at D3ATH in front of Benin University along Lagos Road.
The deceased was said to have been riding a motorcycle when he was hit by a tow driver on Tuesday, who accelerated the motorcycle after the accident.
According to the vendor who witnessed the accident, it is not clear whether the wary soldier tried to stop the trailer before it was crushed.
“The accident happened suddenly. The trailer was heading to Lagos and suddenly, the people were lying on the road, with no breath on their heads.”
“No one can say whether the alert person is trying to stop the trailer when the accident occurs. It’s so sad that these people have to die in this way.”
Moses Yamu, spokesman for the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the incident, adding that the driver had been arrested.
“The accident happened and died in the process. The driver is now in our custody,” PPRO said.
The bodies have been stored in the morgue at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
