The Lagos State Police Command has filed a lawsuit with Bumpa co-founder Adetunji Opayele’s D3ATH (commonly known as Teejay).
Police confirmed that Odutayo was arraigned in Court No. 1, Tinubu, on March 12, 2025, who was arraigned after being discharged from the hospital. She faces allegations of reckless driving and careless driving on public highways, resulting in the death of Opayele.
The incident occurred on March 4, 2025 and attracted widespread public attention, with more than 35,000 Nigerians signing petitions for justice. Many have called for more serious charges, including manslaughter rather than reckless driving.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the development in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “We #lagospoliceng acknowledge the public’s concerns about the tragic accident that claims Adetunji Opayele (Teejay) (Teejay) expressed the deepest sympathy to our family on March 4, 2025.
“We can confirm that after a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo’F’ was arraigned on Tinubu on January 12, as she was taken to the hospital for driving on public highways in a reckless and careless manner, without proper care and attention to other road users and other road users and causal relationships.[ing] A 32-year-old Tunji Opayele ‘M’ died and thus committed a crime…”
“The court approved her bail and revoked the case until April 16, 2025. The Lagos State Police Department remains committed to transparency, fairness and justice.”
The incident sparked anger, with driver Biola Adams-Odutayo allegedly hesitant to help the injured Teejay, citing fears of staining her car. Witnesses said several hospitals reportedly refused treatment and bystanders worked hard to seek medical assistance. After hours of unsuccessful attempts to obtain emergency medical services, Opayele was eventually pronounced dead.
