Police shot the 18-year-old boy in Edo.
The 18-year-old boy was reportedly identified as Chinedu Abimbor and was shot dead by police in the Esan West local government area of the state.
Daily post reports that the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at the town’s police checkpoint.
It is said that the deceased’s younger brother was arrested by the police.
The incident sparked protests from youth and families of the deceased who demanded justice for the juveniles killed and called for bookings to be held.
A witness who asked not to be named said the victim driving Mercedes-Benz said he refused to stop at a police checkpoint when he was marked by an operator.
He said the young man refused to stop his anger, and one of the agents immediately opened fire on the vehicle, killing the victim in the process.
He also added that at the time of the incident, the victim’s brother was in the vehicle and he was immediately arrested and detained by the police.
“This development prompted angry young people to take to the streets of Ekpoma on Thursday to demand justice for the 18-year-old killed young people,” he said.
The protesters also stopped at the palace of the traditional ruler of Epuma, hrh anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, demanding the immediate release of the victim’s brother from custody.
A spokesman for the protesters determined that he was lucky Adaba, said: “We went to the police station to ask what might have caused the killing, but the police shocked us and started shooting.
“The police have developed the habit of harassing young people driving cars in Epuma.”
Meanwhile, the Edo Prefecture Police Department has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine what actually happened.
