Students at Ibadan Polytechnic University broke out in Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday, protesting the state government’s decision to rename the agency.
The protests caused a huge impasse on the busy Sango-Eleyele Road, with students blocking the entrance to the school and stopping vehicle movements in the area. The commuters were trapped for several hours as the main access route was interrupted.
The student’s anger follows a recent announcement by Governor Seyi Makinde, the student’s anger is the announcement of the late Old Oyo State governor and the governor who held the post during his tenure as the first Ibadan Nesai State. Olunloyo recently passed away at the age of 89.
However, students rejected the move, saying it was an unnecessary change and ignored the institution’s long-term identity. Many describe it as an attempt to rewrite the institution’s legacy without adequate consultation.
Witnesses reported that the campus gates were locked and nearby roads were blocked by protesters, forcing many motorists and pedestrians to move.
