The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis is still in critical condition after a breathing attack and requires high flow of oxygen and blood transfusions.
The 88-year-old Pontiff has been hospitalized at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome for the past nine days, battling double pneumonia.
“The situation of the Father remains crucial, so, as explained yesterday, the Pope is not out of danger.” The Vatican announced.
A Vatican spokesman revealed that Pope Francis suffered an extension of the asthma respiratory crisis, leading to thrombocytopenia and anemia, which required blood transfusion.
“The Holy Father continues to be alert, and even though he suffers more than yesterday, he spends his day in the armchair.” Added a statement.
Prayer and guess about the future of the Pope
The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis would not hold weekly Angelus prayers on Sunday, raising concerns about his ability to continue leading the 1.4 billion Catholics around the world.
His long-term hospitalization has sparked speculation about possible resignation, a topic the pope has previously spoken about.
“I can’t see a fixed environment.” Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez said it had dismissed rumors of internal Vatican manipulation to choose a successor.
However, given the ongoing health issues of Francis, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi admitted that resignation could not be ruled out.
Gather faithfully in prayer
A group of nuns and priests gathered outside Jagley Hospital on Saturday to provide prayers for the pope’s recovery.
“We are praying for the Holy Father Pope Francis today and our hope is that He will recover well in the grace of God. ” Brazilian pastor Don Werison said.
The Pope, who had previously undergone colon and hernia surgery, continued to fight hip and knee pain, demanded that he spend most of his time using a wheelchair.
Vatican medical officials said despite health challenges, they are gradually reducing his medications while monitoring his condition.
