    • Portugal has extended the validity period of visas and residence permits for foreign nationals until June 30, 2025.
    • Holders can now stay, exit and re-enter the country without facing legal consequences.

Portugal has extended the validity period of visas and residence permits for foreign nationals until June 30, 2025.

Holders can now stay, exit and re-enter the country without facing legal consequences.

Under the DAAD scholarship, the extension applies to all basic documents that expire on or after February 22, 2020 and ensures that foreign nationals can continue to stay in Portugal without interruption.

Documents that expire on or after February 22, 2020 will be valid until mid-2025. This covers residence permits, visas and other legal documents. Foreign nationals will be allowed to live, work and relocate within the country without interruption.

All Portuguese public institutions will recognize the validity of these documents for legal purposes.

    The degree of expansion

This extension is suitable for multiple types of visa and resident license holders. This includes:

    • Residence Permits (ARs) include CPLPs, as well as short-term, temporary and residence visas.
    • Other important legal accommodation documents

These documents are now in force until 30 June 2025, allowing holders to maintain their legal status in Portugal.

    Identify extended files

Extended papers are required to accept all public and private institutions in Portugal. This includes various institutions, such as:

    • College of Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP)
    • Institute of Social Security (ISS)
    • Portugal Revenue Agency (AT)
    • National Health Administration (SNS)
    • Local authorities (city and parish councils)
    • Bank employer

These entities will recognize the legality of the documents for all legal, professional and social purposes.

The rights of foreign nationals in Portugal

The new rules allow foreign nationals to stay in Portugal legally. It also allows people to leave and return to the country by showing their extended documents as proof of their legal status. The decision aims to alleviate the uncertainty many foreign residents have experienced due to the backlog and delay caused by the pandemic.

The expansion ensures that people can continue to live in Portugal without fear of losing their legal status.

    Schengen travel restrictions

This extension is only applicable within the Portuguese border; it does not affect other Schengen countries. Foreign nationals who extend their visas are reportedly required to meet the entry requirements of other Schengen states.

The conventional Schengen border code will apply when traveling between Portugal and the rest of the EU.

The report shows that foreign nationals who have problems during the pandemic appreciate this new approach.
