The Nigeria Poultry Farmers Association’s decline in egg sales in the country has attracted attention, citing the economic difficulties and low purchasing power of Nigerians.
The Guigava State Branch of the Association, led by Mr. Hussaini Gumel, revealed this during a courteous visit to Umar Namadi, Governor of the State Capital Government Building, Dutse, on Thursday evening, May 8.
“Our industry has been hit hard since the fuel subsidies were lifted. Many Nigerians no longer afford eggs and our sales plummeted,” Gumel said.
He blamed the decline in sales on the growing economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians.
He added that this situation has been further exacerbated by rising production costs, including feed and other inputs.
“We are working hard to get our business floating,” Gummel said.
Members of the association face many challenges, especially in accessing affordable poultry feed.
“Jos, the chicken feed in the plateau state is much cheaper than Jigawa and many other states. This difference makes it difficult for poultry farmers in the Gumel lament to maintain profitability.”
He said the current economic situation further exacerbates the challenges, and many Nigerians struggle to afford chicken and eggs due to limited financial resources.
“Our products don’t have a market for markets, and it’s shocking that people lack enough funds,” Mr. Gumel said.
The Chairman added: “Poultry farmers also lack basic infrastructure, such as refrigerators and cooling equipment, to preserve their products in hot weather.
“We call on government intervention to prevent losses caused by product damage.”
