President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the National Assembly to review existing laws that allow states to establish their own police forces as part of efforts to address growing insecurity across the country. This was contained in a statement on Wednesday declaring a national security emergency.
“I call on the National Assembly to start reviewing our laws and allow states that require state police to establish laws,“he said.
The president also added that his “administration will support state governments in establishing security agencies to protect the people from terrorists bent on destroying the peace of our country.”
He urged educational and religious institutions in remote or high-risk areas to ensure a continued police presence.
“Countries should reconsider establishing boarding schools in remote areas with insufficient security. Mosques and churches should constantly seek police and other security protection when gathering for prayers, especially in vulnerable areas,” he said.
The call-in of the state police is part of a wider security strategy that includes recruiting 20,000 extra police officers, deploying trained forest guards and beefing up armed forces in troubled areas.
He authorized the police to recruit 20,000 new police officers, bringing the total number of police officers to 50,000, and approved the use of National Youth Service Corps camps as temporary training facilities.
“My fellow Nigerians, this is a national emergency and we are responding by deploying additional police forces on the ground, especially in areas where security is challenged.
“The times call for all hands on deck. As Nigerians, we should all be involved in keeping our country safe,” Tinubu said.
The President directed the Ministry of State to deploy well-trained forest guards to clear out bandits and terrorists hiding in the forests and recruit more personnel for forest operations.
He reiterated that police officers removed from critical duties should undergo emergency training before being redeployed to critical areas.
