U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new Canadian levy on aluminum and steel after retaliatory tariffs from U.S. neighbors.
Trump said in a lengthy post on Tuesday about his truth social account it was retaliation for a 25% surcharge on electricity sent to northern U.S. states on Monday.
Trump said he would tax the auto industry if tariffs, including tariffs on agricultural products, “in essence, this would permanently close Canada’s auto manufacturing operations.”
Trump said that on Wednesday, the increase in tariffs from 25% to 50% would have an impact.
He also said Canada relies on the United States for “military protection” and reiterated his hope that the country will become the 51st state in the United States.
He added that if Canada joins the U.S. as a state, that would make all the taxes and everything else go away completely”.
“Based on Canada, Ontario, Canada, with a 25% tariff on “electricity” in the United States, I instructed my Secretary of Commerce to increase tariffs of 25% on all steel and aluminum, 50% on all steel and aluminum entering the United States from Canada, which is one of the tariff countries anywhere in the world.
“I will soon declare a national emergency in the power sector in the threatened areas,” he added.
Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian electricity in Michigan, New York and Minnesota on Monday to deal with Trump’s early tariffs.
Ford, a conservative politician who runs Canada’s most populous province, said he is ready to “turn off electricity completely” if the United States continues to “upgrade.”
Trump’s anger continues in the second article, who warned Canada to pay historically “financial prices” for its electricity prices. Many states in the Northeast buy supplemental energy from Canada.
‘Why can my country provide us with electricity even in a small area? Who made these decisions and why? Can you imagine Canada bent over so much that it uses electricity, which affects the lives of innocent people as bargaining chips and threats to bargain? They will pay economic prices for such a large economic price that history books for many years to come will be read in history books! ”Trump rages.
