PSC said that it has no power to retire IGP and cannot guide his retirement.

Police Service Commission (PSC) clarified that it has no constitutional power to determine the appointment or retirement of the General Prosecutor of Police (Kayode Egbetokun).

This clarification is after the latest instructions about PSC’s latest instructions that have been serving for more than 35 years or more than 60 years old. The PSC statement signed by a spokesman Ikechukwu Ani emphasized that the power of the committee has not extended to IGP.

The statement explained that according to Nigeria’s constitution, PSC is responsible for the appointment of police, promotion, dismissal and discipline. In addition to IGP, the president is appointed by the President’s committee.

PSC also clarified that the decision decision on January 31, 2025 was related to the regularization of the appointment of the student official and had nothing to do with IGP. In addition, the committee also reviewed the previous decision of 2017, involving the appointment date of the students, and the conclusion that it was inconsistent with the rules of public service, so it was invalid.

PSC reiterates that it operates within the scope of power awarded by the Constitution and is committed to supporting the constitutional authorization of the Nigerian police forces to maintain the national law and order.
