Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move comes after Fubala ended a long-running rift with his estranged political godfather, former Federal Capital Territory minister Nyesom Wike.
The rift began in late 2023, when members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike attempted to impeach Tomihara.
An alleged misunderstanding over control of state resources and appointments was further exacerbated when arsonists set fire to part of the State House in Rivers on October 29, 2023, just hours before pro-Wake lawmakers planned to impeach the governor.
At the height of the crisis, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency over Rivers in March 2025, and Fubala, his deputy Ngozi Audu and all elected members of the House of Representatives were initially suspended for six months.
Former Chief of Naval Staff Ibok Ekwe Ibas was appointed as the sole administrator of the country.
After his suspension was lifted in September 2025, Fukahara, his deputies and lawmakers were reinstated.
Tomihara held a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Monday evening.
