Former Chelsea player Romelu Lukaku explains why he decided to leave Chelsea in his second spell at Stamford Bridge Club in his second season.
Speaking in an interview, the Belgian international revealed that he and some other senior players were not fair during the Chelsea board of directors’ board of directors.
He said that when talking to the Italian publication Corriere Dello Sport, most clubs always put a bad image on the players they want on the club.
“I’m not alone at Chelsea (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang and (Hakim) Ziyech also exited the project. They made us change in the youth locker room. It’s the business, the club tells you that it doesn’t want you anymore and often where it ends up, but you don’t want to leave, they don’t drag the media out of the position or create the wrong image, I’ve seen things I’ve never thought of.
Romelu rejoined the Blues to move from Inter Milan to summer 2021 with a record transfer fee of £97m, the seven years he left Chelsea to join Everton. But despite a promising start, he quickly became a striker in West London, a year later he rejoined the international currency before re-loaning to Rome and then permanently moved to Naples last summer.
However, Lukaku believes that Chelsea supporters have misunderstood him in English, often referred to as overweight and lazy.
“For them, I’m lazy, but I never reacted to the attack. I’m a guy who does his job and then goes home. In Italy, the opinions have been reversed, here is a worker. Now (in Nanapoli) I’m better than in the International Bureau. There I’m 101 kg, here, here is 99kg.”
