Security agents, including police, resorted to tear gas on Monday to disperse a group of about 200 women, protested against the emergency rules imposed by the River State and demanded the resumption of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Naija News The report said protesters came mainly from Elleye and Engine in the eastern local government area and they gathered to express opposition to the appointment of Ibokette Ibas, the only administrator of the state, which they believed had undermined the state’s democratic process.
Tensions escalate when the women marched in the streets, shouting songs of unity and displaying placards with messages like “Ibas Well Un Dory” and “Our democracy is threatened” when security forces try to prevent their progress. However, the protesters stood up and refused to back down.
In response, security forces, including police, fired tear gas into the crowd, causing chaos as women fled in all directions.
The use of tear gas has obviously troubled some women, and the viral video captures their reactions as they cry in pain as they inhaled the substance.
Despite attempts to disperse them, the women remained provocative, some sitting on the ground and continuing to shout, “No simulation, no river state.”
