The company told AFP that Samsung Electronics co-CEO Han Jong-hee D! Tuesday, March 25, he is 63 years old.
Han, who is also a board member, died in the hospital Tuesday while undergoing cardiac arrest treatment, a company spokesman said. The spokesman added that Samsung has not decided on a successor.
“He died of cardiac arrest today,” a Samsung spokesman said, adding that Han’s wife and three children survived.
Han became CEO of South Korea’s largest company in 2022 and is also responsible for its consumer electronics and mobile devices division.
Han is known for promoting the TV business of South Korean tech giants on the global stage. He joined Samsung in 1988 and is considered to have played a key role in obtaining high-end TVs around the world.
“Han unveiled on Samsung’s world-class LED TV,” the company said in a company biography published earlier this month.
It added: “Many of his other innovations have enabled the company to constantly demonstrate its technological leadership.”
The company called Han the “top of the global market” and kept it there.
Samsung Electronics is a flagship subsidiary of South Korean giant Samsung Group, and by far the largest family-controlled group dominates Asia’s fourth largest economy.
Traditionally, the company has a shared CEO structure that separates oversight from its consumer and bargaining sectors.
Han joined Samsung about 40 years ago and built his career in the TV business.
“Han is a key figure in making Samsung’s TV business globally,” said an analyst. “With his sudden death … it could have a long-term impact on its business strategy, especially in the market.”
Han is not part of the Samsung family, which remains the dominant position of the company, with third-generation leader Lee Jae-Yong being the current head of Samsung Electronics.
Han’s De@Th’s strategy can be against Samsung’s top strategy in the global TV market.
“Considering that he has been deeply involved in Samsung’s TV business for decades, helping it firmly secure its global position, his absence could impact global strategies in the coming years,” Dae-Jong said.
