The confirmation was a report presented and considered by the Senate Interior Committee and chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North).
“The Senate does accept and consider the Interior Committee regarding the confirmation of the nomination of Nwakuche, Sylvester Ndidi Mni, MFR, to appoint as the Nigerian Correctional Service Controller,” Oshiomhole said introductory report.
After confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio urged Nwakuche to prioritize efforts to curb jailbreaks across the country. “I’m giving anyone a lot of stuff. I hope his appointment will end the jailbreak,” Akpabio said.
President Bola Tinubu nominated Nwakuche for the position last week and forwarded his name to the Senate for confirmation. In a letter read during the Akpabio plenary meeting, the President listed Article 3(1)(b) of the Nigeria Correctional Services Act 2019 as the basis for the nomination.
“Under section 3(1)(b) of the Nigeria Correctional Services (NCOS) Act 2019, I am pleased to propose that the Senate confirmation appoint Mr. Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as Mr. nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi (NCOS) of the Nigeria Punishment Services (NCOS). “While I expect the Senate to consider this requirement in a usual swift manner, please accept the outstanding president of the Senate, which is my highest guarantee of consideration.”
The nomination was forwarded to the Senate Interior Committee for further legislative review and reported within a week leading to Tuesday’s confirmation.
