
A boat accident in the Joel River in the Rao Local Government area of Talaba State claimed six lives, while nine other passengers were rescued.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
According to police sources, the ship transported 15 people while the midstream was tilted.
Rescue work led to the recovery of nine survivors, while the bodies of six passengers were later evacuated from the river.
The accident has been identified as Dadi Malm Doti (30), Mubarak Abdu (21), Bappa Malam Doti (20), Adamu Yayagardi (30) and a Madugu (22), all from Funakaye Lga of Gombe State of the Teera ethnic group, and all Madugu (22).
The sixth victim was Umar Gambo (34) of Zaura Ward of the Karakare group.
The boat driver is currently working on finding him.
Police sources said the search and recovery operations were conducted in collaboration with local divers and community volunteers.
